This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Camilla Or a Picture of Youth Fanny Burney Books

This book is so interminable, that even though I officially finished reading it, I don't think I'm really done. The boredom I endured will live with me forever.

Nothing interesting happens here, nothing. Oh sure, the author tried to spin some comedy out of the multiple misunderstandings, as if it was one, looooooooooong Three's Company episode, but it's so one-note, it's aggravating.

The book is filled with one-note characters too, completely indistinct and uninteresting.

I've read boring books before, but this took the cake, especially considering its size. Not even the great Voltaire could dense this gelatinous mass into any version worth reading, unless Mr. Furley himself audiobooked it. That's the only way.

I want the month back that I spent reading this book.

Camilla Or a Picture of Youth Fanny Burney Books Reviews

Not as good as Evelina, but still an enjoyable read.
I liked the characters in this book and enjoyed the story line, but so many of the circumstances and misunderstandings were so annoying and kept me in a constant state of agitation. Most of the calamities seemed so easily avoided and most of the characters got on my nerves at one point or another. This is the second book I've read by this author, and I felt the same about the other one. One thing I will say is that I had a hard time putting it down, mostly because I wanted to plow through the mess and get to the resolution and happy ending that I felt sure was coming. It took a very long time in coming, however, and just kept getting worse and worse all the time. Then the climax was extremely melodramatic, but the end was satisfying.
A delightfully long novel. I spent a lot of the time crying. Rare for me to let a novel touch me emotionally. Nothing is mundane,
once I got into the "rhythm" of the older language, I loved it. Lots of twists and some of it may appear boring but it kept surprising me.
Camilla has many of the plot devices so common to readers of Victorian lit, and also some of the more lurid aspects of a Walpole novel. The work is long and requires the patience that can be afforded by a lover of the genre. I think a shorter work focusing on the psychosocial challenges of the deformed Eugenia might have turned the novel into a remembered classic.
I am rating this 3 in appreciation for the historical importance in the development of the novel. For pure reading, it is heavy going. Very flowery and wordy, although there are some great sections. But the farcical obstacles and misunderstandings that keep the lovers apart are so contrived, they are hard for readers today to believe. As are the illnesses, injuries, and emotional prostrations which enable the plot. But the basic structure is good, and inside these thousand pages is a great story trying to escape.
I'd read that this was one of Jane Austen's favorite authors, and as a free classic on I figured I couldn't lose. Wrong. There went a couple of hours of my life I could have spent re-reading something by Austin herself. I got halfway through and couldn't take it anymore, the writing style that took so very much to say not that much, much of it depressing. I jumped to the end, found it boring, and archived the book as not being worth space on my . Personal taste.
